Frigate co-operation between the Navy and Air Force
The integration of helicopters onto the Norwegian Navy's new frigates is to be undertaken in close co-operation with the Norwegian Air Force. Air Force officers are also to take part of the permanent crews on board the new vessels.

- We wish to be a schoolbook example of how the different branches of the service can co-operate, said Commander of the Coastal Squadrons, Commodore Trond Grytting.
Every frigate will have a NH 90 helicopter stationed on board, crewed by personnel from the Air Force. It will also be the task of the Air Force to operate and maintain the five helicopters. With helicopters on board the efficiency of the frigates as a joint weapons platform will increase and the integration is beneficial to most of the tasks the new vessels will take on.
The helicopters will increase the capacity within both surface and anti-submarine operations significantly. The capacity of the frigates to insert and evacuate personnel as well as search and rescue will also increase. The Norwegian Defence’s vessel-based helicopters will in many cases be the first assets available in case of major accidents.
Aerial officer on board
The integration of helicopters into the Navy is a significant task that is to be undertaken in close co-operation with the Air Force. The fast crew of the frigates will according to the plan consist of 120 personnel; 50 officers, six of which from the Air Force, 40 contracted personnel and 30 conscripts. The Coastal Squadrons will take command of the vessels as they are completed in October 2005.
The commander of the Coastal Squadrons will be in charge of the training and preparations of the frigates, both for domestic and international operations. The Commodore is looking forward to the integration of helicopters into the Norwegian Navy.
- This way of integrating the tasks of two different branches of service is new to the Norwegian Defence. It will be interesting to unite the respective cultures of the Navy and the Air Force onto the same vessel, and we are looking forward to becoming a model as to how to undertake such tasks, said the commander of the Coastal Squadrons enthusiastically.

The Chief of Staff of the Air Force is equally enthusiastic:
- These are going to become the best frigates of the world, concludes Major General Tomas Collin Archer. He looks very positively upon the chance to build and exchange competence between the branches of service.
Replacing the Oslo-class
The first two years after taking over the new class of frigates will be spent on testing and operational evaluation until 2007. The running- and crewing concepts need to be evaluated, and tactics need to be developed for the new vessels. Not until 2007 will the Fridtjof Nansen-class of frigates be given specific operational tasks. The Nansen-class will be replacing the Oslo-class frigate and will be far superior compared to its 30-years-old predecessor in most areas. Among other things the weapons and censors of the new vessels will have longer ranges, which the new vessel-based helicopters will contribute to ensuring.
Operations abroad
The Fridtjof Nansen-class frigate is specially built for operations in Norwegian waters, and the vessels are to be robust enough to be able to handle arctic waters. The new vessels will also strengthen the Norwegian Navy's ability to participate in operations abroad, and will be taking part in NATO's permanent Atlantic Forces.
- The Nansen-class is well suited for participation in international ocean-control operations like maritime surveillance, blockades, embargoes and anti-submarine operations. The frigates can also be used to support humanitarian operations in case of the need for evacuating civilians, said Grytting.
Training as of the fall
The responsibility for the construction and equipping of the new frigates, as well as communicating with the Izar shipyards in Spain and various subcontractors falls on the Norwegian Defence Logistical Organisation.
Even though the KNM Fridtjof Nansen, the first of the five new frigates to be completed, is not to be operational for several years, the key crewmembers of the frigate will be assembled in August on the KNM Horten. The key crew consists of 25 officers that have to be trained to man the new vessel. Additional officers and crews will be added to the key crew in 2004 and 2005.
Facts:
- Between 2005 and 2009 Norway will be acquiring five new frigates of the Fridtjof Nansen-class. The first of the new vessels is expected to be launched on April 1st, 2004.
- The contract with the Spanish shipyards Izar was signed in June of 2000, the contract was awarded to Izar after tough competition with the German Blohm + Voss.
- The frigate project has a financial framework of NOK 15 billion. In financial terms this is the most expensive project ever undertaken by the Norwegian Defence.
